CVC Fashion Article: Embrace the Lace

CVC Fashion Article: Embrace the Lace

Your grandmother’s old saggy dress, poofy wedding dresses circa 1994, ‘80′s Madonna “Like A Virgin” dress…all of it screams the horror of Lace! Today, that has definitely gone out the door! Lace has been recycled and re-incarnated for 2010 and it is definitely something grandma would not wear. The patterned fabric is current, edgy, and sexy in the right doses.

Hey CVC Members! The best ways to incorporate lace without looking like a senior citizen? Lace tights, of course. The trendy look is best captured with this season’s faux leather skirt and thigh high boot. Not to despair if one does not own a faux leather number or the ever-terrifying boot of supermodels! It also goes very well with tight skirts, t-shirt dresses and denim cut offs. Personally, I love to rock my lacy legs with short motorcycle-esque boots or white Keds.

To make sure you are not looking too sexy for that lecture, pair the racy fabric with an oversized v-neck tee or a plaid button up. The key to mastering this look is all about balancing the sexiness of lace with the simplicity of a t-shirt and skirt. ‘Cause after all, nobody wants to look like they are trying too hard. It is all about looking effortlessly put together. Tops with lace detailing are another option. Layer a tank top over a lace camisole for a sexy sweet look! Top it off with a slouchy cardigan and a pair of skinnies for an easy school outfit

Lace Dress. There are tons of lace dresses available nowadays that are more chic than fussy. When searching for the perfect frock, look for ones that either hit above the knee or just at the knee. Anything too long will look like you are getting hitched. I would also suggest sticking to an A-line shift dress…too many ruffles and pleats will look childish. To keep from looking too prissy, add in one of this season’s must haves: a studded belt.

Lace Accessories. If you are still on the fashion fence with lace, it is easy to incorporate it with a necklace or a chunky cuff.

Last reminders:
• Lace looks fab when combined with fall’s luxe fabrics such as tweed and velvet. Combine for an ultra stylish cozy look!
Outfit: Strapless velvet dress with lace tights and suede wedges.

• Choose ONE lace item. Too much lace and you will be getting called grandma and getting served the early bird special when all you wanted was a late afternoon snack.

• Don’t be afraid to mix and match lace with polka dots and stripes. Just keep all the proportions of prints in mind. Do not go overboard— or risk looking like a value village mess ;)

• Try colored lace—purple, red, yellow, turquoise, grey…

• Wearing lace tights is a cheaper and far more convenient way to covering up those pasty legs (hello, fall!)

• If you are doubting that lace tights are not warm enough (really? C’mon, it’s not like you have to trek up a mountain like your fellow SFU counterparts) then double up on tights! Wear colored tights underneath the lace ones for the same look but double the “warmth”

So next time you are walking to the SUB in your fabulous outfit, do not be surprised if you see a few heads turn around—because trust me, you will definitely be commanding attention in those tights.
